Definitions

Definitions are used in many technical documents. You'll find them in instructions manuals, parts documentation, item order information sheets, property or site survey materials, and countless other materials. Although definition is a simple and almost intuitive concept for most document developers, in instances where communication of clear distinctions among similar items is important, an elemental breakdown of the concept of defintion can be helpful.

A definition has three parts:

The entity that you're defining

A familiar group to which the entity you're defining belongs

The distinction between the entity you're defining and the other entities in the group

Ex: A chair is a piece of furniture whose purpose is to provide seating.

Some methods of definition include:

  • Analogy

  • Similarities

  • Differences
